“Afterward you will come to the hill of God where the Philistine garrison is; and it shall be as soon as you have come there to the city, that you will meet a group of prophets coming down from the high place with harp, tambourine, flute, and a lyre before them, and they will be prophesying. Then the Spirit of the Lord will come upon you mightily, and you shall prophesy with them and be changed into another man. It shall be when these signs come to you, do for yourself what the occasion requires, for God is with you.” – 1 Samuel 10:6-7
This passage is part of a detailed word given to Saul when Samuel anointed him to become the first king of Israel. Here we see that Saul is to have the Holy Spirit come upon him mightily, that he will prophesy and be changed into another man. It is at this point, filled with the Holy Spirit, changed into a new man, that Saul is given the authority to choose in such a way that God will bless it.
We know from history that Saul in the end turns away from the Lord, but at this point early in his kingship, he walks in the authority and power of the Holy Spirit.
What Saul experienced then is available now to all who believe in Jesus Christ. When we give ourselves fully to Him, we receive the Holy Spirit. What this brings is authority and power to exercise the will of God as we exercise our own.
Please be careful on this point. This fusing of His will with ours does not mean that whatever we do is His will. We do still make choices that are not God’s will. For example, when we sin, our sin is never His will. The fusion of His will with ours takes place when the love of God fills our hearts. His love in us compels us to act, and we freely choose to act in that love, which is the power of God. Acting out of the love of God is always His will. And when the love of God is in our hearts, acting out of that love is also our will.
Think of it! Sometimes doing what the Lord wants is the same as doing what you want. Being Spirit-filled changes you into someone who does His will naturally, for “God is with you.”
We serve a God who is beyond our comprehension. His wisdom and power is such that He can give us complete free will, true free will, without compromising His will. It is not “either/or” but “both”. This is the love of God that changes us from the inside.
